Revised Estimates? You mean there's more of us?

(Proudly Cross-Posted at Clintonistas for Obama)

So, I was perusing the local news, and ran across a story about some new math coming out of the International AIDS Conference, currently being held in Mexico City.

CBS13 is reporting:

The country had roughly 56,300 new HIV infections in 2006 -- a dramatic increase from the 40,000 annual estimate used for the last dozen years.

While the CDC doesn't think that their "New Math" will dramatically increase the total projected number of infections in the US, they do feel it a failure in prevention efforts.

But some advocates complain that CDC's annual spending on HIV prevention in the United States has been held to roughly $700 million since 2001, while costs have risen. (That's about 3 percent of what the federal government spends on AIDS; much of the rest is on medicines, health care and research.)

This figure is VERY small, considering the total number of ASO's out there that are doing harm reduction programs.  We, as a society, need to drastically increase our investment in protecting our future generations from this epidemic.

While both Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama have signed onto the National AIDS Strategy, we need to hold their feet to the fire to ensure they keep their committment past this election cycle.

That's why I'm proud to be working with the Campaign to End AIDS on their Stand Against AIDS action in Oxford, MS the 3 days leading up to the first Presidential Debate.  Sen. Obama's people will be attending a Town Hall meeting the day before the Debate with our participants, and the C2EA is working to get McSame's people there too. We're pretty sure, however, that McSame doesn't really care about AIDS in America .... just like the Bush Administration's current stance.

As y'all can see, this is a pet issue for me, as I am living with HIV.  Hopefully, the next administration will do more to help prevent the virus from spreading, and will work to shore up both continuing care for those of us with HIV/AIDS, and working even more agressively towards both a Therapeutic and Preventive Vaccine.

Just my 2 Cents - comments welcome

Dizzy

True... (2.00 / 3)

I just hope that a President Obama will turn course and reverse these last 8 years of Bush ignoring this crisis and throwing money at abstinence only education, thinking that's some panacea for HIV-AIDS.

Re: True... (2.00 / 4)

I have full confidence in Obama on this.  He's a moral person, and he knows what the right thin is here.  It's too important for us to allow McCain to take us back to the Reagan years.

Re: Revised Estimates? You mean there's more of u (2.00 / 4)

Actually HIV/AIDS is not something you need to lecture Hillary Clinton about. I think her legislative accomplishments speak for themselves on this issue. You can blame Bush and his gutting of funds for health services and prevention for that.

Re: Revised Estimates? You mean there's more of u (2.00 / 3)

I agree completely.  I know Sen. Clinton's bonafides on this issue speak much louder than any rhetoric ... I was merely stating that she had signed onto the National AIDS Strategy platform, as has Sen. Obama.

Dizzy- glad you know this. You would be surprised the ignorance of some in our party that do not know this. I am around today thanks to one of her bills. Anyways I have no doubt she will fulfill her obligation. She's never let this community down and I don't expect her too. The gay and lesbian community does not have a bigger or better friend than Hillary Rodham Clinton. I wish more people would follow her Christian example.

Re: Revised Estimates? You mean there's more of u (2.00 / 4)

Anyways- not meant to snark. I just think it's the GOP that needs a little education when it comes to this topic. Obama's and Clinton's records are stellar on this issue.

It wasn't taken as a snark ... we are in complete agreement!  Thank you for your comments, and for taking the time to read the diary.

Thanks, Dizzy... (2.00 / 3)

We simply can't ignore HIV-AIDS as a problem any longer. It's not under control here in the US, and something needs to be done here as much as something needs to be done in the developing world. I hope Obama won't ignore the renewed HIV epidemic as our next President.

Re: Why in the hell (2.00 / 2)

I didn't hide rate you, but if I had to guess, it's the extreme lack of understanding, complete absence of compassion, and the RW stand you appear to take on this issue.  Iffn I ever used HR, your comments on this and my previous blog would be prime candidates for me to use it on.

For what it's worth, I don't favor hide rating anyone.

Re: Revised Estimates? You mean there's more of u (2.00 / 1)

China has taken lots of public health flak in the past for falsifying or 'underestimating' disease statistics. SARS pretty much took care of that. sad to see that the Bush 'interfere with non-partisan agencies' cancer has made US health statistic reporting worse than China's!!

Re: Revised Estimates? You mean there's more of u (none / 0)

While I like your premise, this is an issue that predates the Bush Administration.  We've been using the same 40k stat since 1992(to my best recollection).  While new testing methods and new tests allowed them to update the number, I'm questioning why CDC didn't re-evaluate the stat 10 years ago.  There's an International AIDS Conference every 2 years, and the CDC and other American health agencies have seen how everyone else keeps updating their numbers, but we haven't until now ... someone at CDC has been asleep at the switch.
